Fall and early winter, before the chill sets in, is my favorite time to max out style; this season offers endless opportunities for <a href=/articles/2017/05/daily-wisdom-anoraks>layering</a>, playing with textures, structure and volumes. The <a href=/articles/2016/05/from-runway-to-gym-slideshow>runways</a> are always overflowing with new ideas, but many are unachievable and unrealistic for real life. So I have <a href=/articles/2017/11/approach-athleisure>curated the trends that matter</a> for those of us that lead an active life on the move, prioritizing pragmatism, those of us needing fashion to work for us, not vice versa—otherwise why invest? Fall in love, go on, I dare you. There is plenty here to whisk you off your feet, or just keep them squarely on the ground. </style>Trend 7:The Best Oversized OvercoatsGiven that whenever we step out in the cold season, the majority of our outfit is the coat, there is no excuse for opting for a boring shape in black. Wide shoulders made a comeback this season and are flattering on every body shape (if you are on the shorter side, just don’t wear anything that falls below the hip). An ankle-length solid wool coat envelops, is practical for staying warm, and adds way more confidence than its calf-length alternative. The rule is the longer the length, the narrower the shoulder should be, otherwise proportionally it looks like you borrowed your Dad’s overcoat! Just be brave—a statement overcoat puts a giant spring in the step and simply says, 'I have arrived.'
