THE GIST

Most homes have the couch positioned directly in front of the TV. “But by moving the couch off to the side, it won't be the unhealthy default to spend hours watching a show,” says Matt Berenc, director of education at Equinox. You can also place the TV in a cabinet. Out of sight, out of mind, which might make you more likely to cook a homemade meal, practice meditation, or relax with a good book instead.

EXPERT INSIGHT

Designing your surroundings to help support the positive decisions you want to make (a practice known as choice architecture) can be key to achieving your wellness goals, explains Berenc. "We’re all subject to our environments and seemingly benign decisions can be enough to derail motivation to follow through with a plan."

THE BOTTOM LINE

Define a goal and modify your physical surroundings to promote habits that lead to success, says Berenc. For example, if you want improve your sleep quality, unplug your router at night so that you won't be tempted to continue scrolling through emails.
