Target aging, dryness, and dehydration with these additions.

Most of the time, exercise is great for your skin. But as is often the case of too much of any good thing, skin issues can arise when athletes are hyper-committed to a particular routine. During these times, incorporating skin boosters can help address the specific concerns that arise with their preferred method.

Boosters are targeted formulas that are more potent and rich in their active ingredient makeup than traditional skin care products, says Sarah Garland, senior manager of planning for The Spa at Equinox. If you’re engaging regularly in any of the following types of exercise, try adding a booster to a serum, moisturizer, or oil when your skin needs an extra kick.

When the temperature drops, athletes are more likely to neglect sun protection. However, the skin is still vulnerable to damage in the winter months. For days when you’re heading outdoors, add this vitamin C booster, which Garland says can help reverse and prevent aging caused by the sun, to a moisturizer that contains SPF.

Every workout requires a post-exercise cleanse to rid of sweat and bacteria. But washing the face frequently can strip it of vital moisture, says Garland. Following your second daily session, add this booster to your moisturizer for an extra punch of hydration. “Hyaluronic acid can hold 1000 times its weight in water, meaning it can increase moisture in dry skin while helping plump and fill out wrinkles and lines,” she says.

Research shows that those who are frequently exposed to high temperatures are at higher risk for hyperpigmentation since heat triggers melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment in our skin. If you’re attending more than three hot yoga classes per week, Garland recommends adding a booster that addresses skin discoloration to your routine. It includes linoleic acid and pyruvic acid to even out the skin tone and enhance glow.
