Don’t vape your vitamins

Unrivaled Group Fitness classes. Unparalleled Personal Training. Studios that inspire you to perform and luxury amenities that keep you feeling your best.

It’s an ineffective delivery system.

THE GIST

Vaping is increasingly infringing upon the wellness space. Companies such as VitaStik and Sparq are selling pens with vitamin-filled cartridges rather than nicotine- or THC-filled ones, suggesting that key nutrients can be vaped.

EXPERT INSIGHT

There’s little to no research showing that you can absorb vitamins and minerals through inhalation, explains Kelly Hogan, RD, clinical nutrition and wellness manager at Mount Sinai’s Dubin Breast Center in New York City.

Your body absorbs vitamins in the small intestine. That’s also where gut bacteria interact with nutrients so you can actually utilize them, explains Marjorie Nolan Cohn, RD, CSSD, a Philadelphia-based certified integrative and functional medical nutritional therapist. But when you inhale vitamins, they never reach the small intestine, so they pass through your body unused.

On top of that, nutrients in vape pens are highly processed, which makes them even less potent.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Don’t vape your vitamins. Get them from whole foods instead, Hogan says, and work with a registered dietician if you think you’re deficient.
