It makes the capsules more palatable.
Fish oil boosts brain function, reduces inflammation, and strengthens your immune system, but it comes with an unpleasant aftertaste. Certain strategies can reduce that pungency.
EXPERT INSIGHT
The aftertaste sets in as your stomach processes the supplements. One way to make the flavor more mild is by keeping the capsules cool, says Lauren Tefft, a Tier X coach at Dartmouth Street in Boston. The reason: When cold, they take longer to break down, so the flavor is released at a slower rate. “I generally recommend the freezer over the fridge to deal with the fishy taste.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
Chilling the supplements won’t negatively affect nutrient absorption or potency. As a bonus, keeping them in the freezer may extend their shelf life.
