A Beyoncé essay collection, vegan cookbook, and more
Being up to date on all things health and wellness is social and cultural currency these days. And while quick-hit news bites are great, in-depth reads are still a worthy pursuit. Many non-fiction books come out every month, though, and it can feel overwhelming to cut through the clutter. That’s why we started the Furthermore book club. Here, our picks for this month.
The book: Work Wife
By: Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur
The gist: The co-founders of the fashion and design website Of a Kind draw on their experiences and those of other successful “work wives,” including Olympic volleyball phenoms Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, to show how female friendships can lend themselves to empowering professional relationships. “These partnerships are changing not just what it means to be women in the workplace, but the workplace as a whole,” they write.
The book: Loonshots
By: Safi Bahcall
The gist: Weaving together science, history, and business, physicist and biotech entrepreneur Safi Bahcall offers a new explanation for what causes people to either embrace or dismiss great new ideas. For example, the development of statins, one of the most significant medical breakthroughs of the twentieth century, was nearly jeopardized multiple times before being approved. He then distills these insights into lessons anyone can use to create and nurture their own “loonshot” thinking.
The book: Queen Bey
Edited by: Veronica Chambers
The gist: Veronica Chambers, an editor at the New York Times, has assembled an illuminating collection of essays to show the multifaceted brilliance of Beyoncé. Voices include scholar Brittney Cooper who discusses the singer as a feminist icon, British Vogue editor Edward Enninful who traces her powerful sense of style, and legendary music executive Ebro Darden who describes how she changed the music business.
The book: 26 Marathons
By: Meb Keflezighi and Scott Douglas
The gist: Meb Keflezighi is the first person to win both the Boston and New York City marathons as well as an Olympic marathon silver medal. In his new book, Keflezighi dissects each of his 26 marathons, and shares key takeaways from each race down to crucial miles, triumphs, and mistakes.
The book: River Cottage Much More Veg
By: Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
The gist: Since the release of his widely-acclaimed River Cottage Meat Book, the English chef and restaurateur Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has turned into a passionate messiah for vegetables. In his latest cookbook, he takes his clean eating philosophy even further. The 175 vegan recipes include satisfying dishes like red cabbage-cashew biryani and blackened cauliflower with pecans and tahini—all prepared without refined flour and sugar or any animal products.
