From Acne, Stüssy, and more
The rugby shirt is unique, not only for its blocky stripes—distinct from soccer’s vertical lines—and (optional) ornate crests, but also for protective features like thick cotton weaves, long sleeves, and wide, stiff collars.
As rugby culture has fanned out from Northern Europe—Japan and New Zealand were standouts at this year’s World Cup—the rugby shirt has emerged as a versatile athletic staple, and can even be worn as a fresh alternative to the kitschy holiday sweater. Says stylist Angel Emmanuel, "I love rugby shirts, I wear them year-round. The stripe designs and color combinations are cool and nostalgic of 1960's London, when the rugby shirt was in everyone's wardrobe."
Here, seven not-too-casual options to sport this season:
Acne Studios Rugby shirt
This pullover combines Acne’s urban aesthetic with outdoorsy durability. Don it with dressy-ish Acne trousers and a pair of hiking sneakers.
Bonobos Rugby Polo
During this year’s World Cup in Tokyo, the menswear brand dropped four varieties, including this festive-adjacent forest stripe. Style with Moncler’s down blazer.
Stüssy Blake Rugby
Purple and green stripes add a colorful, festive accent while fitted cuffs provide warmth. Wear it for a hike under a puffer vest or out for drinks with black trousers.
Aimé Leon Dore Ribbed Shoulder Rugby
Rugby apparel is a frequent inspiration at this startup fashion house. This cool but classic piece is a sweatshirt hybrid. You can wear it with just about anything, but especially other comfortable, ’90s-leaning items like those from the AFFIX x Asics collab.
Union x Marni Cotton LS Rugby
This knit jersey is part of LA streetwear brand Union’s collaboration with Marni. Try it with denim, like these mid-weight JJJJound x A.P.C jeans.
Saturdays NYC Sanders Grey & White Polo
The sharp lines and oversized collar of this top create a silhouette that's both modern and dinner-appropriate. Pair with bold active footwear, like MSGM’s cleat-inspired Silva sneaker or all-black Prada oxfords.
DANIEL w. FLETCHER Striped Rugby Shirt
While the baggy shape evokes streetwear, the plunging button-up placket makes for a breathable jogger’s top. A burgundy colorway feels especially seasonally appropriate.
