Gym bag hack: solid serums

5 picks that marry potency and efficiency

Most skincare experts would agree that serums are the most potent step in your skincare regimen for two important reasons: They contain multiple active ingredients and—because they are made up of small particles—are designed to penetrate deeply, rather than sitting on the skin’s surface. This translates into a larger pay-off when it comes to anti-aging, brightening, or hydrating benefits.

Still, there are a few cons. Serums expire more quickly than other skincare products and can be rendered inactive when exposed to sunlight, not to mention the glass vials can be hard to transport in a gym bag. That's where solid serums come in.

“We are seeing an uptrend in solid skincare in general,” says Kate Roach, Equinox's New York City–based regional manager at The Spa. “Solids are a great choice because they provide concentrated, stable formulas,” she explains.

“The consistency of pressed serums varies greatly; some feel like a creamy balm, while others are even more solid in the form of a stick,” explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. But, he adds, “Generally speaking, they are made using oils and waxes, so tend to be heavier than other serums, making them particularly useful if you have dry skin, or in the winter months."

Simply apply your solid serum post cleansing and toning and skip the moisturizer step. “A pressed serum can replace your two-step routine of a serum followed by a moisturizer,” Dr. Zeichner confirms.

Here, 5 options to try:

Anda Super Nutrient Balm

Key ingredient: sea kelp

Anda Super Nutrient Balm

This moisturizing and anti-aging balm contains antioxidant-rich sea kelp and carrot seed. The formula is said to boost collagen, which smoothes fine lines and repairs skin damage. Says Roach, "It's gentle enough even for the most sensitive skin."

MILK MAKEUP Watermelon Brightening Serum

Key ingredient: watermelon extract

MILK MAKEUP Watermelon Brightening Serum

This solid serum is made with hydrating watermelon fruit extract which, the brand says, fights dark spots, evens out skin tone, and reduces the appearance of fine lines.

ALGENIST POWER Recharging Night Pressed Serum

Key ingredient: seaweed

ALGENIST POWER Recharging Night Pressed Serum

Alguronic acid is a main ingredient in this serum. It purports to combat fine lines and a dull, uneven complexion. Algaprotein, derived from seaweed, improves skin elasticity.

TATCHA Serum Stick

Key ingredient: squalane and Japanese lemon balm

TATCHA Serum Stick

Squalane and Japanese lemon balm work together to lock in moisture and help with fine lines while minimizing UV damage. The concealer-like stick is best applied under the eyes, on laugh lines, or in other targeted areas in need of a boost of hydration.

Province Apothecary Healing Balm

Key ingredient: hemp oil

Province Apothecary Healing Balm

This rich balm is made with hemp oil and beeswax to help soothe dry, cracked, or irritated skin, or even eczema, Roach says. You can use it on hands and feet in addition to the face.
