Outdoor Running Gear Essentials

Unrivaled Group Fitness classes. Unparalleled Personal Training. Studios that inspire you to perform and luxury amenities that keep you feeling your best.

Discover the 17 pieces of running gear you need to perform your best on the sidewalks and trails.

Running is considered one of the easier sports to get into, largely because you can do it from virtually anywhere, and all you really need to get going is a pair of shoes — some will even tell you those aren’t all that necessary. Yet, one of the key components that makes running so fun — and addicting —  is the gear.

Sure, you can certainly step out your front door in those beaters you wear to cut grass, your high school gym shorts, and an old t-shirt, but to maximize the experience and cut down on discomfort along the way, it helps to have the proper attire.

With insight from three-time marathon finisher and Precision Run Coach Jaime Rauso, we’ve got you covered with all there is to know when it comes to outdoor running gear. From socks and sneakers, to technical shorts, moisture-wicking tops, and must-have accessories, here’s the necessary kit that will help take your running to the next level.

Sneakers

“I think for a new runner, really all you need is a pair of shoes,” says Rauso, who admittedly has “way too many pairs.” When searching for that perfect model, the longtime athlete strongly suggests getting professionally fitted at your local running store. They’re likely to tell you that different types of runs call for different shoes, too.

I think that there are a lot of different benefits to different types of shoes, depending on the type of workout you're doing,” Rauso adds. “If you're starting off, I would just start off with an easy day shoe because all your runs at least should be pretty easy. But as you get into it, I definitely think there's a benefit to having a rotation as it relates to the purpose of the run.”

Pants

Unless you live in the Arctic, you’ll likely be wearing shorts for the majority of your runs. Fit is, of course, key, as is an assortment of pockets to securely carry any necessary accessories. “The more pockets, the merrier, especially if you're going for a longer run,” Rauso shares. “What I also look for is a waistband that stays in place.”

On Active Shorts

ACTIVE SHORTS

The Active Shorts by On are particularly impressive because the style is a two-in-one design. Featuring comfortable inner tights and a lightweight outer layer, each piece of the shorts can be worn together or separately, depending on what your training looks like that day. The tights are made from thin nylon and elastane materials with sweat-wicking properties, while the outer short is produced in a feathery blend that is considerably soft and stretchy.
