A San Diego member’s journey to fine-tune her gender-neutral style with expert help from an Equinox Shop Associate.
Styled by Equinox is a series following an Equinox member’s style evolution, as curated by a Shop Associate.
When you look good, you feel good — and when you feel good, you work harder in the Club. For our new Styled by Equinox series, we asked Equinox Shop Associates nationwide to style some of their favorite clients. Today, we’re spotlighting Shop Associate Kat Newman and Equinox San Diego member Wendy Robinson.
To achieve Wendy’s look, the pair experimented with fusing men’s and women’s styles for a timeless vibe that Wendy can wear to do anything and everything, from grocery shopping after work to camping up and down the coast with her husband in their Sprinter van.
Meet Wendy Robinson, Equinox Member since 2019
How would you define style?: "I define style as an individual taste that doesn’t conform to trends — it’s what makes me feel good."
Personal style in three words: “Eclectic, fly, functional.”
Solo workout or group fitness class?: “I mainly lift. I have yet to take a class.”
How often do you visit Equinox?: “Six times a week."
What’s most important to you about the workout gear you choose?: “I can never have enough cropped, loose-fitting tops. Leggings or pants have to be squat-proof, opaque, and high-waisted.”
Your signature look?: “I would say it’s a cut-off graphic t-shirt and baggy pants with Chucks or Vans.”
How Kat Styled Wendy
Kat, tell us about the look you chose for Wendy and why.
Kat: "So Wendy and I share a similar aesthetic. We both enjoy wearing menswear as much as women's stuff. I'm 40, and Wendy is older than I am, and we share the opinion that many women’s styles have gotten scant. So, we decided to try a twist on things. I had received the ASRV joggers, and I actually styled them on the female mannequin because I thought they would be flattering on women — which they are; actually, I think they’re almost more flattering on women! — and we both fell in love with them. "
"Then, I thought we’d pair them with a fitted crop top to balance out the masculine edge. I know Wendy loves crop tops and fitted joggers, so it aligns with what she wears. We threw on the cropped Alo top, and she was thrilled. She’s since bought the ASRV joggers in every color, so she has multiples of everything."
What’s your favorite part of the look, Wendy?
Wendy: “Honestly, the best part of the styling session was having fun with Kat because she’s such a fun person. But if I had to choose, definitely the ASRV joggers. I like pants; I really don’t wear tights. I’ve worn joggers since my early 20s, and I’m 51 now — my style hasn’t really changed.
“Kat knows because I work out pretty rigorously, I have to be comfortable and functional, and I can’t be worried if things are, you know, sticking out. My clothes need to be functional and appropriate but still cool.”
Did any of Kat’s selections surprise you?
Wendy: “I wasn’t quite sure about the puffy purse [from Think Royln] at first, but I really like it, and I use it. Also, the cropped hoodies. I don’t typically wear hoodies when I work out, but I like cropped shirts. Kat saw me walk in several times in those cropped tees, so she recommended one, and she was right.”
Kat: “I pulled the Royln crossbody bag because I know she likes chains. The one she wore for the shoot is from a previous season, but all the Royln bags have this unfussy element to them. I’d seen her wearing checkered Vans at the Club, which, oddly enough, I also wear with almost everything. Something about the Royln bag feels like a similar classic.”
Where can you see Wendy wearing this look?
Kat: “Well, she wears it every single time she comes in. She wears it every single day [laughs]. This is literally her uniform.”
Wendy: “It’s true. I am an RN, so if I’m not in scrubs, I’m in activewear. This look is everyday casual wear. My husband has a Sprinter van, so we’ll do weekenders up the coast during our free time. We also go hiking and on long walks. I’d wear this look for all that, but also to run errands — you know, go to Costco or run out for groceries.”
How would you describe your new style?
Wendy: “Eclectic. Kat and I are alike in a lot of similar ways. We understood each other. I never really match, but it works in my own way. I am a non-conformist, and I think I’m cool for my age. This look makes me feel like myself.
“You know, it’s funny, I have not shopped for workout clothes other than at the Equinox Shop. I really enjoy coming to the Club. It’s my favorite place to come other than home. So, when I want something [new to wear], I’ll just pop in.”
