Breaking Bread with Sofi Tukker

How the Grammy-nominated duo prioritizes wellness on tour.

Coming off the August release of their third studio album, BREAD, Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern — better known to electronic music fans as Sofi Tukker — kick off the European leg of their tour with Kygo this week. It’s a career-defining moment for the pair, who’ve been creating music together since first meeting as students at Brown University in 2014.

Sofi Tukker shows are literal dance parties thanks to the infectious, upbeat bossa-nova sound of their Brazilian-inspired music, which sees Sophie singing in a medley of English and Portuguese and Tucker driving the bespoke sampler and playing bass.

The Grammy-nominated duo’s acronym for BREAD sums up their M.O. perfectly: “Be really energetic and dance.”

“I'd definitely say we have a high-performance lifestyle,” Sophie tells Equinox+. “We treat our shows like games in sports. We run around the stage, dancing, singing, giving a ton of energy.”

Despite the go-go-go mentality and expectation to always be “on,” the best friends, roommates, and collaborators always find time to fine-tune their relationship to wellness.

Sophie shares that she enjoys squeezing in workouts at nearby Equinox Clubs whenever possible, admitting that she has a “love-hate relationship” with the fan bike and VersaClimber. “In terms of routines and workouts, I've tried so many different things — some stick, some are experiments, but they’re all in service of feeling my best,” she adds.

Tucker, on the other hand, prefers bodyweight and resistance-band exercises from the comfort and convenience of his hotel room or green room, and he considers a post-workout cold plunge “a real treat.”

“A focus on my body and health is still a key part of my life,” says Tucker, who previously played college basketball through his junior year at Brown. “It's our goal to put on the best possible show every night, so we have to treat ourselves like athletes and properly train and recover to do what we do sustainably.”
