Equinox+ spoke with five of these Coaches, who also happen to be passionate runners themselves, about the transformative benefits of the program, their advice for aspiring runners, and more.

Monique Bell

Club: Equinox Miracle Mile

Why I run: “I run for my mental health and clarity. Running helps when I’m struggling emotionally, allowing space to clear my mind and quite the noise. Running is my therapy — it helps connect me to my bigger vision and higher purpose in life.” 

Quote I live by: “I live by ‘movement is medicine’ and believe it should be practiced daily in order to prevent the body’s decline in both strength and mobility.”  

My advice for aspiring runners: “Start slow, take it one day at a time, and be patient with your body. It’s important that new runners also learn to prioritize both strength and mobility in order to get better.”

Why Precision Run Coaching is unique: “It’s designed for new runners but also offers 5K, half- and full-marathon training that can be done at your own pace. The program is science-based and can be customized to meet individual needs. Members also have the option to include independent outdoor training days to their personalized programs.”

Gregory Cohen

Club: Equinox Studio City

Why I run: “I run to inspire others dealing with chronic illness. I have a rare autoimmune disease called Scleroderma and I try to be an example for others that no matter what challenges you face, you can still move your body. Also, I run to be better than I was yesterday and to achieve new heights for myself. The run is something that helps me to relieve stress and get out of my head for a while.

Quote I live by: “Movement is life, just keep moving!”

My advice for aspiring runners: “Just start! Running can bring so much to someone and that doesn't even mean training to run a marathon. It's a form of moving meditation, a chance to make friends, or even get more in touch with yourself.”

Julie Howell

Club: Equinox Sports Club Boston

Why I run: “I run because it is my absolute favorite form of self-care. Through all of the highs and lows in life — on both my best and worst days — I almost always feel better after a run. And even on the few occasions that the run itself doesn't cure all, it still gives me a healthy boost of endorphins and helps me find some clarity.”  

Quote I live by: "Be curious, not judgmental." 

My advice for aspiring runners: “Go into it with an open mind and patience. Running is a skill.  For some, it comes more naturally. But even if it doesn't come naturally to you, with patience and persistence, you can master almost anything. Smaller, attainable goals are the stepping stones to achieving larger ones. Don't forget to celebrate all of the small victories along the way.”

Evan Wood

Why I run: “At the beginning, running was my escape, stress release, and classroom, all wrapped into one… I still run because the lifestyle continues to introduce me to a seemingly infinite number of inspiring everyday people who run for every imaginable reason.”

Quote I live by: “Laugh always, even when it is buggy.”

My advice for aspiring runners: “Running really is as simple as putting one foot in front of the other, but you need to know your ‘why’ if you hope to make it a fun, rewarding and sustainable part of your life. Achieving goals such as running your first nonstop mile, finishing a marathon or qualifying for Boston are impressive, shiny objects, but the real trophy is what you learn about yourself, the friendships you make, and the impostor syndrome that you shed along the way.”

Why I run: “Whether it's running on a trail at first light or in a big-city marathon, it brings me so much joy. Running can be a magical experience!”

Quote I live by: “Miles don’t lie.”

My advice for aspiring runners: “If running a whole mile seems daunting, begin with a mix of walking and running, gradually increasing your running intervals as you build endurance. And don't forget to warm up! The beginning of a run can feel like the hardest part when your nervous system hasn't had time to adapt to the demands of running. Always take time to warm up before your run with some dynamic stretches and light jogging.”
