Expert-backed tips for restoring your glow after baby.

Whether it’s your first kid or your fifth, the postpartum period is a whirlwind of new experiences, emotions, and adjustments. For many new moms, the demands of caring for a newborn often take center stage, leaving little time to focus on themselves. But amidst all the changes, your skin tells its own transformation story. It’s recovering, recalibrating, and adapting — much like the rest of your body, physically and mentally.

As Equinox members, you know that wellness is a multifaceted commitment that blends physical health, mental clarity, and personal care. Your postpartum skincare routine offers a chance to reconnect with yourself, nurture your body, and embrace the journey you’re on. Equinox+ spoke with Denise Liquore, Equinox Spa Manager for the Westchester/CT area, about how a thoughtful skincare routine can become a powerful tool for supporting your high-performance lifestyle and overall well-being.

During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations often lead to skin changes such as melasma (small, dark patches), acne, or stretch marks. “Postpartum, new moms often experience acne, dryness, hyperpigmentation, hair loss, spider veins, scalp dryness, eczema, uneven skin tone, puffy eyes, and dark under-eye circles. These changes are due to hormonal imbalances and lack of sleep, but it’s important to note that most skincare concerns are temporary,” says Liquore.

Postpartum skincare is not about perfection but about recalibrating. “It can take three to six months for your hormonal shifts after pregnancy to regulate when it comes to your skin,” says Liquore. Like training in the gym, the goal is progress — finding a routine that restores balance, enhances confidence, and fits seamlessly into your demanding schedule as a mom.

The Foundations of a Postpartum Skincare Routine

Cleanse Gently but Effectively

As a busy new mom, you need a cleanser that pulls its weight — something that tackles dirt, debris, and the occasional makeup (on those rare days you wear it) without leaving your skin feeling like sandpaper. Look for a hydrating, sulfate-free formula that gently cleanses while keeping your skin’s natural barrier intact. Augustinus Bader The Cream Cleansing Gel is packed with soothing ingredients like rose water, cucumber extract, and aloe juice to leave skin refreshed and ready to take on the day — or a quick nap while baby sleeps.

Hydrate and Replenish

Your skin feels the effects of your body running on three hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation can zap your glow and leave your skin dry and dull. Replenish lost moisture with a serum containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin like Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum, followed by a rich, ceramide-infused moisturizer. “Hydration is key for postpartum recovery. Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides are ideal ingredients to prioritize, and safe for breastfeeding moms,” says Liquore.

Address Pigmentation and Texture

Postpartum melasma or dark spots are common and can be addressed with brightening ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, or azelaic acid. These gently target pigmentation while promoting a more even skin tone. Dr. Lara Devgan Vitamin C+E Ergothioneine Antioxidant Serum promotes a brighter complexion, reduces inflammation, and decreases hyperpigmentation while being gentle on sensitive skin. Retinol is hailed as a gold-standard ingredient in the beauty world for tackling a range of skin concerns, but as Liquore points out, "it’s not safe for breastfeeding moms."

Protect with SPF

Sun protection is essential at every stage of life, but it’s especially crucial when addressing pigmentation from postpartum skin changes. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even if outdoor time is limited to stroller walks or quick errands. “If you’re breastfeeding, opt for mineral sunscreens instead of chemical ones, as they’re safer and won’t be absorbed through the skin,” says Liquore.

Simplify, Don’t Overwhelm

Postpartum life is full, and your skincare routine shouldn’t add unnecessary stress. “Less is more right now! Use a hydrating cleanser, hyaluronic acid serum, lotion, and mineral sunscreen at a minimum. If there’s time, add exfoliation and a mask for extra care,” says Liquore. For a multitasking treat, the Patchology Chill Mode Calming Face Mask deeply moisturizes skin while you close your eyes and take a quick cat nap.

Supporting Recovery with Whole-Body Wellness

Skincare is one piece of the postpartum recovery puzzle. Stress and lack of sleep can cause inflammation and hormonal imbalances. Incorporating practices like relaxing baths, calming meditations, or asking for help can make a significant difference.” Hydration, proper nutrition, and gentle movement, such as postnatal Pilates or yoga, all support recovery by replenishing the body, boosting circulation, and promoting a natural glow.

“Our customizable Renew Facials, Longevity Facials, and Endermologie treatments are especially beneficial postpartum. Endermologie, our newest technology, includes a postnatal treatment program that targets areas like the stomach, waist, buttocks, and thighs to promote a balanced silhouette and lymphatic drainage,” says Liquore. These treatments are designed to seamlessly complement your high-performance lifestyle, helping you feel radiant and rejuvenated.

Your postpartum journey is about resilience and transformation. By syncing your skincare routine with your wellness goals and busy lifestyle, you can feel good about taking care of yourself and confidently embracing this new phase.
