Warm-up move: lateral steps
In his Outdoor: Downshift Precision Run on Variis, David Siik says to get your blood flowing with side steps. While walking, turn towards your right and do a side step side away from you with your left leg. Bring your feet together, and do another one. “Lateral movement can awaken muscles and ligaments important to navigating outdoor terrain, leading to a safer, more comfortable run,” says Siik.
An advanced option is a side step into a squat. Just play with it, doing a few reps. Turn around and repeat in the other direction.
Quick-hit side: brussels sprouts slaw
This no-cook dish comes together in less than 30 minutes. It features low-calorie, nutrient-rich Brussels sprouts, which are thinly sliced into ribbons, then tossed with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice. Smashed cashews add a creamy consistency and deep, nutty flavor.
Reuse takeout utensils.
Single-use takeout utensils are an enormous source of waste—some 7.3 billion sets of them accompanied food ordered in China in just one year, according to a recent study. “Reusing tableware provides a potential solution to reduce waste and emissions from takeaway meals and a new strategy for promoting sustainable and 'zero-waste' lifestyles,” says one of the study authors, Ya Zhou, Ph.D., an associate professor at Guangdong University of Technology.
The next time you get delivery, rinse off plastic utensils and save for another meal, or request they leave them off your order entirely.
Exercise your writes.
If the upcoming election is causing you stress, channel that energy into action. Luckily, there are myriad ways to get involved. Equinox editor Leah Bhabha signed up to send postcards to increase voter turnout. “I felt so paralyzed reading the news and thinking about November, so I decided to harness that anxiety and do something to make a difference,” she says.
