The Daily Check-In 12.7

Get lost in a story.
MOVE

Play a brain game.

“I’m trying to keep you all on your toes,” says Matt Ortel, of this lunge variation in his Athletic Conditioning: Full Body Basics class on Variis. “It’s ok if it gets you a little bit.” Do it for 30 seconds on each side, maintaining a consistent tempo. “Can you get that knee up higher in the front and the knee closer to the floor in the back?”

EAT

Seasonal superfood: kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is rich in potassium (which can promote bone density and reduce blood pressure), according to Kristin Kirkpatrick, RD, lead dietician at Cleveland Clinic Wellness & Preventive Medicine. It also has more vitamin C than fruit like strawberries and grapefruit. The vegetable is sweet and mild, so eat it raw with dip, sauté or roast it with garlic, or steam and mash it.

DE-STRESS

Massage out sleep wrinkles.

The skin on your chest deserves as much attention as the skin on your face—especially if you’re a side sleeper, says Leah Gilmore, senior manager for operations at EQX Body Lab and The Spa in New York City. “Side sleeping has its benefits, like aiding in digestion and reducing acid reflux, but it might wreak havoc on your skin, especially for women: Because of the rounded, stacked position of your shoulders, you may begin to notice deep lines forming between the breasts and on your decolletage in the morning,” she adds. Gilmore recommends using a rich facial cream if you notice lines, and massaging from the center of your sternum up and outward across the pecs.
