The Daily Check-In 5.30
Pre-game your run.
“I like this warm-up, from Precision Run’s Switch-a-Roo workout on Variis, before any run,” says Bethany Snodgrass, operations manager at the Equinox Fitness Training Institute. Do each move for at least 30 seconds, then ease into your run by briskly walking or jogging for a minute or two first.
Shoulder Rolls: Pull your shoulders up to your ears, and then drop them down.
Butt Kickers: Pull your heels up towards glutes, pushing off the ground with the heel.
Quick Feet: Shuffle the balls of the feet on the ground beneath you as if the ground were hot.
Expand your cellar.
Warmer weather = lighter wine. Ashley Santoro and Caitlin McConnell of Leisir, a Manhattan wine shop specializing in biodynamic, organic, and sustainable wines, curated four summer-ready bottles that can be shipped nationally.
Consider consequences.
For more self-control, position each decision as a choice between consequences. It’s an expert-vetter behavioral science technique called reframing.
How to do it:
1. Note your options. Should I do or skip my workout?
2. Reframe the question as a decision between consequences. Exercising boosts my mood; skipping it could make me sluggish.
3. Make your choice. Facing the outcomes head-on makes the inferior option less appealing.
Avoid hard stops.
Never schedule social Zoom calls back to back: Research from Ohio State University shows that hard stops—having to leave one activity by a certain time to join another—makes the first experience feel shorter than it is.
That sense of time constraint can also make your interactions less enjoyable, says study co-author Selin Malkoc, Ph.D. The solution: Avoid the rush by planning Zoom calls with friends at least a few hours apart.
