The Daily Check-In 6.12

That Friday feeling.

Stretch your breathing muscles.

“This move helps stretch the muscles in between and surrounding your ribs, called the intercostals,” says Keith Irace, Equinox’s vice president of group fitness. “These muscles assist with rib cage expansion and contraction during breathing. Stretching them out is like expanding an accordion to accept more air.” Watch Sho Higuchi demonstrate in his Slow Flow: Gentle Morning Stretches PURE Yoga class on Variis. “Once you’re in the bend, plug your bottom shoulder into the socket (it's likely you've shrugged it up by your ear), then extend the stretch gently by only moving your trunk or torso,” Irace says. Repeat on the other side.

EAT

Choose dessert first.

Doing so can lead to a healthier meal, according to research in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied. Planning a splurge has an even bigger payoff: In the study, people who planned on eating cheesecake consumed 30 percent fewer calories overall (including the slice) than those who picked a fruit salad.

When you know ahead of time that you’re going to indulge after lunch or dinner, you’ll be more inclined to avoid overeating, says Jonathan Dick, a London-based Tier X coach and master instructor at the Equinox Fitness Training Institute.

DE-STRESS

Power with flowers.

“Floral design should reflect your spirit and the season,” says LauraJean Pecci, founder of LauraJean Floral in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For homemade bouquets, use blooms with firm, green stems and follow Pecci’s tips:

1. Cut stems at an angle above their leaf points/knuckles for better water consumption.

2. Add fruits and vegetables on the vine (like grapes, strawberries, and tomatoes) for a farm-fresh look.

3. Don’t overpack the vase: Embrace a sense of movement with negative space and asymmetry.

4. As you build the arrangement, turn the vase to make sure the combinations work at all angles.
