Eat fiber this fall.
There’s an evolutionary reason behind eating fiber-rich ingredients like Brussels sprouts, apples, and pears in the autumn. “Fall is a time of cooling the body off before winter and getting ready for the dry, cold air,” says functional medicine specialist Susan Blum, MD, MPH, founder of the Blum Center for Health. “The fiber in fall fruits like apples and pears helps to clean out the accumulated heat of the summer months before moving into a heavier diet that typically would have seen our ancestors through winter.”
Once it gets brisk, Blum says, move from grilling outdoors to roasting and baking in the oven and add in those starchier fruits and veggies as well as hearty grains like bulgur and oats.
Mix your prints.
When it comes to your workout look, it’s all about the power clash. “Incorporating prints into one’s athleisure wardrobe has become more prevalent than ever,” says Lisa Chiswick, a New York City-based buyer for The Shop at Equinox. "It’s an opportunity to express yourself in a way that you may not feel as comfortable doing outside of the gym.”
Here, 3 ways to master the look:
1. Pair micro prints with large-scale ones, since there’s less visual competition between the two. Animal prints and florals are a staple, but you could apply this with geometric patterns like stripes and polka dots.
2. Wear the same print together in a neutral and a bold hue.
3. Stick with black and white, choosing two patterns in different prints and scales, then add a colorful accessory to brighten things up.
Dating don't: The nye mindset
There is this expectation that New Year’s Eve will be the best night of the year, but it could never live up to that hype, says Laurie Mintz, Ph.D., professor at the University of Florida and author of Becoming Cliterate.
The same “manage your expectations” advice applies to dating IRL as the world opens up. When planning dates, whether with your longtime partner or someone new, don’t have everything riding on this being an amazing, perfect day. “Go out and have some fun and break the routine with no other expectations,” says Mintz.
