EATING A HIGHER-CARB BREAKFAST, AS OPPOSED TO FUELING UP ON PROTEIN, MAY MAKE PEOPLE BETTER AT DECISION-MAKING THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

TRAIN YOUR ABS FUNCTIONALLY.

“I know you’re thinking abs when we do crunches on the ground but we’re really thinking of balance, that’s what helps you stand on one foot and move throughout your life,” says Molly Day, of this move in her Ab Lab: Straight to the Core class on Variis. “This is functional ab training, baby!” Try three rounds of 30 seconds on each side. Keep your eyes focused on one point to help avoid wobbling, and if you’re feeling good, add a little jump at the top.

FRENCHTOAST-DESKTOP

MAKE SAVORY FRENCH TOAST.

This healthier take on French toast features spinach, broccoli, sausage, feta, and onion, but you could skip the meat (or add a different variety like turkey bacon), and swap in any veggies or mild cheeses you have on hand. If you want a more custard-like dish, opt for using milk, whereas chicken or vegetable broth will increase its savory factor.

COGNATIVE-DESKTOP

PRACTICE COGNITIVE REAPPRAISAL.

Let’s say someone cuts you off while you’re driving, or your friend blows off your planned a.m. workout without an explanation. When you’re angry or upset, try to regulate your emotions with cognitive reappraisal, says Dilip Jeste, MD, senior associate dean at the University of California San Diego and author of Wiser.

In other words, you’re reinterpreting the meaning of what happened: Maybe the other driver has a sick child in the back seat of his car and is racing desperately to the hospital. Maybe your friend was up late managing a work crisis and slept through your workout date. “It doesn’t matter whether you actually know the reason for the other person’s behavior, only that you now have a reason to let the perceived offense pass,” says Jeste.

INSTRUCTOR PLAYLIST: DAMIEN ALEXANDER

Variis yoga instructor Damien Alexander (IG: @flowforwardyoga) put together this inspiring stretch or flow playlist, which heavily features one of his favorite artists of the moment, H.E.R. “My playlists are just as precious as the yoga classes I create—it’s all a blended vibe,” he says. “Music can help enhance your movements, release inhibitions, and get you to be present in your physical vessel.” Listen to his playlist below.
