JANUARY 7, 2021

This year, we’ll reassess our eating habits.

RUN BOSTON HILLS.

“This program celebrates what makes the Boston Marathon so special,” says Corky Corkum in her treadmill-based Boston Kick Precision Run on Variis. “The first 16 miles are pretty fast. [During] miles 16 to 21 you hit the Newton Hills.” Mimic them with this interval formula: -Run eight 80-second intervals with 1-minute recoveries. -Every interval starts at 1.5 MPH below your PR (your top speed for one minute) at 0% incline for 1 minute. -Then, you’ll bring your elevation up for the last 30 seconds of every interval. For the first, bring it to 1%. For the second, bring it to 2%, and continue upping it until you get to 8%.

2021 NUTRITION PREDICTIONS

WE'LL ADDRESS PROBLEMATIC EATING HABITS.

After a year of turmoil and stress, people’s nutritional health is reeling, says Krista Scott-Dixon, PhD, Precision Nutrition’s Vancouver-based director of curriculum. “Disordered eating emerged from the pandemic and the suckage of 2020—whether that's being quarantined and bored with snacks or eating to manage the distress of all the events.” In addition to the ultimate (safe) return of dining out as social activity, Scott-Dixon predicts that 2021 will see us unpacking negative dietary patterns.

2021 FITNESS PREDICTIONS

WE’LL REINTEGRATE IRL.

“As the world slowly returns to normal, look for the focus to shift from digital back to physical, with the path forward combining the best of both worlds,” says Matt Delaney, Equinox’s national manager of innovation.

“The pandemic may have taught us a 15-minute HIIT class in your living room can provide an effective workout, but it is not a long-term replacement for an IRL experience. People come to the club for more than fitness and it’s the intangibles this setting provides that many will reprioritize: The feeling of community and being surrounded by like-minded individuals, the support of a studio full of people moving and sweating together, or the sense of purpose that comes with having somewhere to go and something to do. These things (and many others) are what we need the most right now."

PLAY “WHAT CAME FIRST?”

This experiment, called “What Came First?,” tests your knowledge of cultural history. Created by Google Arts & Culture, it positions two phenomena (for example, the founding of Nirvana versus the invention of The Rubik’s Cube) for guessing which is older. The faster you go, the more points you can accrue. Play here
